Monday 28, 18h30 : Route of tapas - Beginning the week with one route of tapas by some of the best bars in the center of Salamanca, to taste their most delicious pinchos.

Friday 1, 18h30: Spanish film - We close the week with a good session of Spanish cinema to continue improving the practice of the language.

Saturday 2, 22h30: Las Noches de Manolita - Don't miss the show at Manolita Café Bar de: "Divinas Conmedias". Cocktail of humor, beauty and know how to be, prepared by three of the best actresses of our land. All the info here.

Sunday 3: Excursions - Come to the school secretary to know the destinations we will have available for this weekend.

We remind you that it is necessary to sign up at the concierge for each activity to reserve your place (the minimum number of participants required is normally three people). And we remind you that the meeting point - unless otherwise stated - is always the Tía Tula school itself.

The activities are designed not only to entertain you (this is guaranteed) but also to improve your knowledge of Salamanca and Spanish culture, and to put into practice the Spanish you learn in class.

Monday, February 1, 18:20h: Urban art exhibit – We´re going to take a walk around La Plaza del Oeste to look at the art that can be found on every corner. Garage doors have become the perfect canvas for young artists, which will surely move you.

August's just started with a lot of fun activities to keep enjoying summer.

Monday 03, 4:00 pm: Film – Let's start the week with a spanish film session to improve our Spanish.

Tuesday 04, 6:00 pm: Guided Tour – Our Spanish Teacher Nela will take us to some of the most symbolic places of Salamanca and will tell us their history.

Wednesday 05, 5:00 pm: Horse riding – We'll enjoy a horse riding through charro fields. It's going to be a great experience!

Thursday 06, 4:30 pm: Padel – We're going to play padel with our Spanish teacher Pablo, who will teach us some techniques.

Friday 07, 7:30 pm: Cinema – We will take you to the cinema to see the film you prefer on the billboard.

Saturday 08 and Sunday 09 – Would you like to go to an excursion this weekend? Come by the reception desk to check the destination available.

Summer is fast approaching! Meanwhile, we say goodbye to the spring and its rainy days enjoying all the extracurricular activities for this week.

Monday 15, 5:50 pm: DIY postcards workshop – We are heading to a very special stationary shop (www.atentamentepapeleria.com) where we`ll craft our own postcard to welcome the summer and where we’ll see that 'imperfection is beauty’ :)

Tuesday 16, 5:30 pm: Theatre workshop – At Espacio Almargen we’ll attend a theatre workshop where we will learn a variety of theatre exercises in Spanish.
Approximate duration: 2 h.

Wednesday 17, 5:30 pm: Horse riding – We’ll enjoy a spectacular horse riding along the Ribera del Duero. An experience you shouldn’t miss!
Approximate duration: 2:30 h (round trip transportation plus 1:30 h riding).

Thursday 18, 3:40 pm: Zumba class – Do you feel like doing some zumba? Our Spanish teacher, Lourdes, will give us a class and we’ll have a good time with her.

As Semana Santa draws to a close, and our capas and capirotes go back in the cupboard for another year, it is time to dive head first into another fun-filled and activity-packed week here at Tia Tula!

Monday 6th, 19:30: Tapas - We will be heading to La Casa de las Morcillas to try a selection of different tapas - potato, onion, rice, sweet, spicy - what will you choose to tickle your tastebuds?

Tuesday 7th, 19:00: Charlamos – Don't miss this great opportunity to improve your Spanish in a fun and relaxed enviroment. Rosa will lead a discussion on a topic currently in the news.

Wednesday 8th, 16:00: Horse riding - Love horses? Join us for a canter around the beautiful Salmantinian countryside.

Thursday 9th, 17:00: Guided tour - Don´t miss this great chance to get to improve your knowledge of the rich and fascinating history of Salamanca. Led by our very own experts Lorena and Ana.

Friday 10th, 20:00: Cookery lesson - Learn how to make a delicious paella, the flag-bearer of Spanish cuisine and one of the country's most popular dishes.

Activities 01/09/14-07/09/14

We have another exciting week of activities planned for you in the run up to one of the biggest parties Salamanca sees all year. Come and check out some of the street art in the Plaza del Oeste district on Monday, or come with us to try some of the best tapas the city has to offer on Tuesday. If you fancy something a bit more active, we have a dance class on Wednesday and an organised treck on horseback on Wednesday. This weekend come with us for a trip to Portugal, or get your party hat on Sunday as the start of 'La Feria' hits the city with the offering of flowers to the patron saint of Salamanca and fireworks later on. It's going to be a great one!

Monday 1st: Street art excursion. We will be going to the area of the Plaza del Oeste to see some of the interesting street art painted on the walls and garages of the area. Meeting place: Tía Tula, 18:45. Approximate duration 1h.

Tuesday 2nd: Tapas tour. We will go to some of the best bars in the city centre to try some of the local Salamancan tapas delicacies on offer. Meeting place: Tía Tula, 19:15. Approximate duration 1h30.

Wednesday 3rd: Horse treck. We will be going out to a beautiful area of the local countryside where we will take you on a horse treck with a local equestrian centre. If you are interested it's important to let reception know before Tuesday 2nd Sept. Meeting place: Tía Tula, 16:00. Approximate duration: 3h.

Thursday 4th: Dance class. We are going to learn the first steps of a typical Latin dance (minimum 8 students) It is important to let reception know if you are interested in this activity before Tuesday 2nd Sept. Meeting place: Tía Tula 19:30. Approximate duration 1h.

Friday 5th: Meet some Spanish authors. You can come to meet several different Spanish authors to see and discuss their work. There is also a small theatre performance during the night. Meeting place: Tía Tula 18:30 (we will show you how to get to the exhibition) Approximate duration: 2h.

Saturday 6th: Excursion. This Saturday we will be taking you on  weekend trip to Portugal to see the cities of Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais. Price includes bus travel and 2 nights in a hotel including breakfast. For information about prices, contact reception. It is important to let reception know if you are interested in this activity before Wednesday 3rd Sept.

Sunday 7th: Feria de Salamanca. This Sunday marks the start of the week long festivities for the 'Feria de Salamanca'. There is loads of things going on, but at Tía Tula we recommend that you see:

-The offering of the flowers to the Virgin of the Lake 19h Plaza Anaya

-Fireworks 22h at  the area near the Roman bridge (puente romano)

Surfing in San Sebastian

Last weekend I decided to take a break from city life in Salamanca to visit the coast and do some surfing in the beautiful Basque region of Spain. I had been up to visit Paddy (the manager) at the stoke travel surf camp in June, and knew  straight away I would be back at least a couple of times whilst spending the summer in Salamanca.

The camp site is just up the hill from the small town of Zarautz (about 10km from San Sebastián) set with beautiful views over the beach and the coastline. The journey into the area is very impressive, with the green rolling hills of the Basque region you get some amazing views from both the bus and the train. 

A typical day consists of surf lessons, skating, table tennis, basketball, tight rope walking, cliff jumping, horse riding, eating good food and partying through the night! So plenty to keep you occupied aside from the main thing of learning how to surf.

If you are looking to visit some of the towns in order to experience Basque costal life, Zarautz is a great place to start! It is a popular tourist destination for both foreigners and Spaniards alike, with its population doubling in the busy summer months. The town is most famous for its 2.8km beach, the longest in the Basque region of Spain. At the end of the 19th century the popularity of Zarautz as a luxury tourist destination grew, with famous people such as Queen Isabella II visiting the town. A number of lavish buildings and mansions were built here around this time, though throughout the 70's and 80's Zaurautz became a more affordable holiday destination, with many of the grand buildings becoming public or being demolished.

Now the town is known worldwide as one of the best surfing destinations, with such a long beach there is plenty of room for surfers, and swell to suit all levels, from beginners to professionals, they even hold a leg of the world surfing championships here. You can find many great restaurants in Zarautz as well, with one of the top chefs in Spain (Karlos Arguiñano) having his own restaurant here.

Just 10km away lies the famous city of San Sebastián (or Donastia in Basque) Despite its relatively small size, San Sebastián is one of the most famous and popular tourist cities in Spain, holding events such as the San Sebastián International Film Festival, and it has been granted the European city of culture for 2016. One of the main attractions of the city is it's coastal location. San Sebastián has one of the best beaches in the region, and is also surrounded by impressive mountains and hills perfect for hiking!

The city is also famous for cultural events, holding the longest running jazz festival in Europe (Jazzaldia) in the last week of July, in which you can find many free concerts at different locations around the city. They also have a contemporary art and film festival called 'Street Zinema' as well as the 'Surfilm Festibal' showing impressive surfing footage, often in the form of shorts.

San Sebastián is perhaps most well known for its gastronomy. It has been said that it is the city with the most Michelin star restaurants per square foot in the world. Being close to the sea the seafood is naturally amazing here, and it is also renowned for having some of the best tapas, or 'pintxos' in the old part of the city.

As well as surfing, San Sebastián also has a top level football team, Real Sociedad, who formed part of the founding members of the top Spanish football division 'La Liga'. Aside from this San Sebastián also hosts the 'Clásica de San Sebastián' cycle race in early August each year, which is part of the world cup circuit.

So if you like the sound of giving surfing a try or experiencing the Basque region of Spain then get yourself up to Zarautz for some surfing and partying! Maybe I'll see you there to try and surf some waves and have a beer on the hill watching the sun set in the evening!
