Salamanca’s Fiesta de la Virgen de la Vega!

Every year on the 8th September Salamanca celebrates the Feast of the Virgin de la Vega. It began long ago by the Roman Bridge as a simple agricultural and livestock fair but it has now changed into a time of Celebration for its Patron and is a tradition that has endured centuries.

Legend has it that the Virgin helped Salamanca  to defend the assault of the troops who wanted to invade in 1706 during the War of Spanish Succession. A statue representing the Saint was recovered from the former Monastery of Vega and was placed on the high altar in the Cathedral of Salamanca. la Virgin de la Vega has been the patron Saint of the city since 1618 and shares this patronage with San Juan de Sahagun. There have been several miracles and favors attributed to her intervention.

The festival will start on September 7, and on the 8th will be the feast of the Patron. During the festival there will be many shows in the streets, concerts, parties for citizens, students and tourists to enjoy. This year the many celebrations include: Etnohelmántica Festival, Street Arts Festival, Medieval Market, Fair Day, bullfighting etc.

Day trip to Segovia!!

I planned to take a daytrip to Segovia with four of my companions from class.  I was unable to go purchase my ticket but my friends from school visited the bus station and they were able to purchase all the tickets for our trip to Segovia. We set off on the 8.30am bus last Saturday for our adventure in Segovia!

 

The bus stopped off to pick up passengers in Avila and we had a moment to view the historic Walls of Ávila. It was a beautiful sight and we are planning another day trip in the future, this time to Avila to visit this beautiful city! The bus ride to Segovia was uneventful and I was so relaxed I slept most of the way.

The bus delivered us to the terminal at around 11.30am and we headed directly to the Tourist office in the terminal to chat with the Tourist Adviser there who gave us good advice on the best route to take to visit all the monuments. If you are worried that as a student it will be difficult to correspond with the Adviser, don’t be, she also spoke flawless English.

Our first stop was the famous Roman Aqueduct which is stunning! The view of the city after climbing the steps was also gorgeous and the city is full of a well preserved historic charm. There were many tourists walking through the streets and you can hear their excited chatter in many different tongues.  We wandered through the streets after that taking in the beautiful architecture, various statues, museums and the Cathedral. Our final stop before lunch was the beautiful Alcázar of Segovia. It was originally built as a fortress but has since served as a royal palace, a state prison, a Royal Artillery College and a military academy. The castle is also one of the inspirations for Walt Disney's Cinderella Castle.  

After walking around visiting the various monuments and shops, we stopped off to buy some postcards and then decided it was time for lunch; and what better dish to try than Segovia’s famous Cochinillo Asado (Roast Suckling Pig)! My friends ordered it and said it was delicious! I don’t eat a lot of meat but the restaurant had a wide range to offer if you prefer something else. 

After a delicious lengthy lunch it was time to head back to the bus station for our return trip to Salamanca. All of us had a nap on the return journey as we were quite tired by then. We got back to Salamanca at around 10.00pm tired but happy. We had a great time!

(Ese dίa hay clase pero no hay actividad).  It is the belief, according to tradition and theology of the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church that the body and soul of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ were taken to heaven after finishing her days on earth (known as Assumption Day).

 

Friday 16 August, 11.00: Movie Alatriste (2006) by Agustίn Dίaz Yanes. In Imperial Spain in the seventeenth century, Diego Alatriste, a fierce soldier fighting for the Spanish cause in Flanders returns to a drastically different Spain to fulfill the dying wish of a fallen friend  Location: Tia Tula - Movie length: 140 min.

Flamenco….Bailar!!

I attended the Azabache Flamenco show in the Palacio de Congresos with some of the students from Tia Tula to view the Flamenco themed performance. We loved it!!  For me, it was the first time I’ve seen Flamenco performed in Spain and it was fabulous. The dancer performed with such a joyous expression and passionate movements you couldn’t help but be drawn into the performance. The singers and the band were excellent and we all had a great time!

 

The performance lasted for an hour and a half and at the end the lead singer’s two sons came on stage. Afterwards the lead singer and his two sons gave an impromptu performance together, with the younger son aged about 10 years, singing lead! We were captivated! He was excellent and the audience encouraged him with cheers and applause! It was a great moment.

 

I hope I can attend another flamenco performance during my time in Salamanca because I definitely enjoyed this one!

My experience visiting a Flea Market

One of the activities organized by Tía Tula last week Sunday was a short trip to a nearby pueblo to visit a flea market. Last week Sunday, I along with some friends of Tia Tula travelled to a nearby town named Holy Carbajosa to experience the flea market.

 

The market was in the main square, which has a beautiful small old stone church in the center. On the church close to the bell, which is still rung by hand, there was a nest of storks, which although very often seen in Salamanca, always has the ability to charm and fascinate me.  

It was a small “mercadillo” and the items for sale varied from books, magazines, dvds, clothing to older collectible items. Some stalls sold clothing, jewelry, bags, shoes ... all the things which brought happiness to us!! I guess it was a little different for Sergio, the only guy who was with us in the group but he had a good time browsing through the many dvds and books on sale.

 

What caught my attention was seeing an old movie player with the projector and reels of film also offered for sale. I thought with the exception of the one my dad has, those had disappeared from the face of the Earth! My father is still keeping his, along with film of when I was a child.  Seeing this item in a little flea market in Carbajosa brought back good memories of my childhood.

 

Afterwards, we all sat on the terrace of a bar in the square for tapas and continued practicing our Spanish. After this visit, I can definitely say that there is always something new and interesting to be discovered in the activities organized by Tía Tula. It was a great way to spend my Sunday morning!

Jazz concerts - Part of the Second Edition of the cultural program “Plazas y Patios”.

Starting from last Saturday there will be concerts scheduled as part of Salamanca’s Second Edition of the Cultural program “Plaza y Patios.”  The concerts will be held at The Gardens of Santo Domingo de la Cruz and are carded to be held every Saturday, beginning on June 29 and ending on July 27. Time is 10.30pm and admission is free.  Modulating Big Band, Coda, Jose Luis Gutierrez, Cool Cats and Blues Trio, Laurent Lavigne,Ñaco&Goñi are the five groups scheduled to perform.
 

To give you an indication on the remaining performances, on Saturday, July 6, will be the Coda group, a Vocal Quintet, of five female voices a cappella.  Jose Luis Gutierrez, one of the most International Spanish Jazz musicians, will perform on July 13.  His performance is influenced by Iberian music and he has a style called "Iberjazz". On July 20 will be the group Cool Cats.They play swing on a blanket of samba, mambo, calypso and rumba. And to end, on July 27 will be the trio Ñaco, Laurent Lavigne & Goñi with a selection of blues standards with special emphasis on Chicago in the '50s and '60s.

Tia Tula encourages you to go out and take part in this activity as it is a good way to interact with others and practice your Spanish.

The legend of the garden of Calixto y Melibea

Last week, after having an ice-cream at the famous "Novelty" glacier, located in the Plaza Mayor, we visited the garden of Calixto and Melibea. This excursion was one of Tia Tula’s cultural activities which are offered on a daily basis. Katy, the person who accompanied us, briefly told us the story of the garden which is related to a book named "La Celestina". The story interested me and since I wanted to know more, I did some research and here's what I found.

 

The original title of "La Celestina" is "The comedy of Calixto and Melibea" title given to the book in its first edition in 1499. There is also a longer version titled "The tragicomedy of Calixte and Melibea" published in 1502. This is one of the most read and most commented upon book in the Spanish literature books. It was written by Fernando de Rojas while he was studying at Salamanca.

 

This work tells the story of Calixto, a young nobleman who falls for Melibea, but she rejects him. On the advice of his servant, Calixto asks for help from Celestine, an old ex-prostitute and witch who was used to playing matchmaker. Celestine called the devil to bewitch Melibea and makes her falls in love with Calixto… However, I will not reveal to you the end of the story for those that have not read the book and want to J
 

As the legend became very popular, people started looking for the specific site where the story could have taken place. As the author wrote the book while living in Salamanca, people decided that the garden of history was that of Salamanca, which is why it is now called Garden of Calixto and Melibea!

Second Edition of the cultural program “Plazas y Patios”.

This year, for the second time, the cultural and tourist program “Plazas y Patios” will take place during the summer and it will focus on the fifth anniversary of the New Cathedral.

 

The program began this Saturday, June 15th and will last until September 1st. The shows will be staged at the Patio Chico, the Courtyard of Schools, the Patio of DA2, Plaza de Anaya, Plaza Juan XXIII, the interior of the Cathedral, the Garden of Santo Domingo and the Cave of Salamanca. There will be performances in music, theatre, markets, audiovisual projections and tours of the Cathedral. All these activities are free and will take place on weekends.

 

The program was presented by the Mayor of Salamanca last Tuesday during a press conference. He announced that there will be a total of 28 events, divided into four sections: "scenic squares and courtyards," "music of squares and courtyards ", "audiovisual projection" and "monastic Market".

 

Last year 30,000 people enjoyed these activities and this year even more people are expected.

The plays offered to the public will be: “Salmántica el año trece una catedral merece” on June 21st and 29th and also on July 6th, 13th and 20th at Plaza de Anaya, at 20:00. “Lo que cuentan las piedras” will be on every Saturday in August at the Patio Chico, at 20:00. “Suena que algo piedra” every Friday and Saturday from July 5th to August 31st at 21:00, 21:30 and 22:00, “Y que cumplas muchos más” on Saturdays and Sundays in July and August at 12:45 and "Happy Birthday" on July 27th at 20:00 in the Plaza de Anaya.

 

The music will also have a lot of importance this year with various types of music: jazz, roots music, classical music and contemporary music.

 

In Plaza de Anaya during the period June 25th and 30^th there will be a daily monastic crafts market. The market will offer for sale sweets and spirits from over 30 monasteries of Castilla y León, Cantabria, Navarra, Asturias and Galicia. Additionally, every Friday and Saturday from June 15th to September 1st the video "500 years is nothing" will be screened on the facade of the cathedral in Plaza Juan XXIII.

Tuesday 11th, 16:45: Guided Tour of the New Cathedral.  Music in the New Cathedrals archives. To celebrate the V Centenary of the laying of the stone foundation of the New Cathedral, the tourist office offers themed tours to rediscover the temple. It is necessary to sign up before Monday 10th, 12:00. Meeting point: Inside the New Cathedral. Approximate duration: 1h. *Tia Tula advises you to watch the Fireworks starting around 22:45 on Tuesday 11^th near the Puente Romano.

Festival of San Juan de Sahagύn

On June 12, 2013 Salamanca will celebrate the feast of their patron Saint, San Juan de Sahagύn. The patron Saint of Salamanca and the town of his birth, in both places he was known for carrying out his humanitarian aid work and major miracles.

As part of the city’s celebrations En esta ocasión, los festejos comenzarán el día 11 de junio, casi al mismo tiempo que finaliza el Festival Internacional de las Artes (FÀCYL 2013), con un concierto del famoso grupo Love of Lesbian , que tocarán a partir de las 22:00 horas en el Multiusos Sánchez Paraíso. a concert will be held featuring the well-known band Love of Lesbian. This concert will be held at the Paradise Multipurpose Salamanca Sanchez on June 11 at 22.00. Also as part of the celebrations atA las 22:45 horas tendrán lugar los tradicionales fuegos artificiales en los alrededores del Puente Romano. 22:45 on the night of June 11 there will be a Firework show around the Puente Romano. La empresa valenciana Pirotecnia Global Foc estará a cargo de este espectáculo que durará, aproximadamente, 20 minutos. The show will last for 20 minutes.
 

On June 12 several sports activities take place: the International Trophy Salamanca City Athletics, "Urban Quarter Mile West" Neighbourhood Making - Making city! and Day of the Dugout.

Extra-curricular activities June 3rd – June 7th

Monday 3^rd, 18:00: Guided Tour. To start the week we’ll show you the beautiful city of Salamanca during a guided tour. Meeting point: Tía Tula. Approximate duration: 1h  

Tuesday 4^th, 20:00: Cinema. We will watch the movie Matador of Pedro Almodovar (1986). It is necessary to sign up before 11am. Price: € 1,20. Meeting point: Teatro Liceo. Approximate duration: 1h45. 

Wednesday 5^th,18:00: Visit of a monument. We will climb the Clerecia Towers to see a view of the city. Price: € 3,75. Meeting point: Tía Tula - Approximate duration: 1 hour.
 
Thursday 6^th, 19:00: Cooking class. During today’s cooking class you will learn how to make ‘tortilla de patatas’ and then you’ll eat it. Price: € 7,00. Meeting point: Tía Tula. Approximate duration: 1h
 
Friday 7^th, 19:00: Concert in the street. We will go to the Patio Chico to listen to Sr Chinarro, a Sevillan Artist who will present his last album “Enhorabuena a los cuatro”.  Meeting point: Tía Tula. Approximate duration: 1h 

Remember to sign up for the activity at the reception beforehand (the minimum number of people needed for each activity is 3). If the cost is not stated then the activity is free. We recommend that our students participate in the activities so they can get to know other students in the school, so they can broaden their knowledge of Spanish culture and to practice and improve their Spanish in a fun way. 

Searching clues arround the monuments of Salamanca

Last Tuesday, Tuesday 14th, May 2013, six students participated in the treasure hunt across the city and I was part of it.

We were divided into two teams; the first to arrive at the final destination won the game. The game had been prepared so that we visited the most famous places of Salamanca (Plaza Mayor, Calle Toro, Casa de las Conchas, Casa Lis…). Tracks and tests were very diverse: Hang Man, rebus, shells, sudoku, ... All this was very funny and the atmosphere between the two teams was very friendly. In addition, teams were composed of people from all different countries, it was an opportunity to share in Spanish our experience in Salamanca.

In the end, the game took us to a bar overlooking the River Tormes. The evening was concluded in a good mood, having a beer and Tapas, giving an opportunity to those who had just arrived to discover this Spanish tradition.
