The Flamenco show

The Flamenco show was one of the most popular activities in Tía tula. The other day, the famous flamenco group ‘Azabache’ came to the ‘Palacio de Congresos’ to show us what real flamenco is (Tía Tula purchased the tickets in advance).

Under the gaze of more than 300 people, the show started. It was full of not only students from all over the world but also the locals. It seems that no one wanted to miss the perfect opportunity to see a serious flamenco show in Salamanca. Three dancers, a guitarist, a percussionist, 2two singers and two ‘palmeros’ accompanied the group and actually the composition itself was simple.

There were various changes of clothing during the show. The singers kept the audience interested by singing beautifully during the clothes changes and it was interesting when an attractive male dancer who appeared in the middle of the show danced with the lady dancers passionately.

As a Spanish man once said “The whole point of flamenco is that it is a dance that unifies guitars, song and dance” and it was absolutely that.

Summer photo of Tía Tula

A tradition of Tía Tula is to take a picture of the students, teachers and staff in front of the entrance on Rúa mayor street when summer comes. There is a Spanish expression and it says no están todos los que son pero sí son todos los que están” that means, “Not all of the listed are here, but the ones that are here, are listed”. This is a good reflection to practice Ser / Estar (In fact, there are other people in Tía Tula at this time - it is a picture only of the morning shift - but all people that appear in the photo are from Tia Tula: either students, teachers or school staff)

This summer photo was taken a few days ago and already a bit old because some students have gone and new ones have arrived (it might be the destiny of a Spanish language school). Let’s see if it still remains beautiful when we take another one in August.

Will you be in the next photo, or the one after the next? We are sure you'll leave here smiling!

Del Bosque in Salamanca!

It is still fresh in our minds that Spanish national football team won the EURO Cup 2012. The other day, Del Bosque, the director of Spanish football team, came to visit Salamanca! The plaza mayor was full of football funs, even though it was a weekday. (This might be because it is Spain..?)  Del Bosque was actually born in Salamanca, therefore, he came to show the trophy to the people of his hometown.

The speech itself was less than 5 minutes and was plain. It would have been more impressive if Del Bosque had behaved cool just the enthusiastic welcome mood of the crowd.

Del Bosque is also involved in the sports promotion of Salamanca and he runs a program called Vicente Del Bosque Campus (http://campusvicentedelbosque.com/) The director believes that the cultural interchange though sports makes people more accepting of other cultures. If you are interested, you can check the site above.

Tía Tula goes horse riding!

Last week Tía Tula braved the heat and went horse riding. At first we were given a mini lesson on how to ride the horse to make sure that we could all handle them on our ride out and then we left the stables in single file.

The ride lasted around an hour and it took us along the green banks of the river and even through the water! The owner told us that this area around the banks of the river is always green, no matter what time of year it is. This is because all the farmers around the area use the free water from the river to water the plants…as we found out when we got wet going under one of the sprinklers. As you are driving towards ´La Huerta´ you can see how the landscape changes from a yellow colour to green and the reverse as you are leaving the area.

All the horses behaved themselves apart from the one at the back who kept pinching bits to eat and then trotting really fast to catch up with the gang… it´s rider wasn´t too amused!

After we had finished riding we were all so hot from the blazing sun that we decided to swim in the river. It was so refreshing but there were a lot of fish watching you swim.

So if you´re looking to do something different and interesting, Tía Tula recommends the ´ruta a caballo´. For more information, you can visit their website.
