New scholastic level DELE A1

The Cervantes Institute publishes diploma level A1 Spanish School Spanish for students aged 11 to 16 years.

It is an official title that corresponds to the levels in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (MCRE).

The DELE A1 School will encourage children and adolescents to learn Spanish.

It has an unlimited validity and evaluates and certifies the knowledge of the student by his first contact with the language.

Will be made for the first time in the next call of May 23, the final date for registration will be 'the April 12 or 11 (depending on the country).

Like  general DELE A1 has four tests:

•  Proof of reading comprehension (45 min.) 
•  Proof of listening comprehension (20 min.) 
•  Proof of written expression and interaction (25 min.) 
•  Proof of expression and oral interaction (10 min. + 10 min. preparation).

DELE EXAMS MODELS

Continuing the theme of the DELE exams, and in response to requests from many of our students, you will find here, so that you may download and work with them, the tests for every levels of DELE: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. We have obtained those tests, from the Cervantes Institute, who are responsible for these tests and for the diplomas that are given to those who pass the exams (For more information, you can visit the Institute's web area dedicated to DELE diplomas). However, we have simplified them in their presentation for ease of use:

- DELE A1 (session of May 2009)

- DELE B1 (session of May 2009, this level of exams was formerly known as “initial”)

Some 43,000 candidates chose the Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (Diplomas of Spanish as a foreign language) in the first half of the year

About 43,000 candidates have registered during the first half of the year to sit the exams to obtain the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE). The exams of the May session have been held on May 24^th and May 25^th in 537 centers across 95 countries.

The DELE diplomas are official qualifications accrediting the degree of knowledge of the Spanish language. They facilitate access to employment and to the academic world. They are issued by the Cervantes Institute on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain.  They have indefinite validity and enjoy wide international recognition.

The May session is the one that has the largest volume of applicants, with two-thirds of the annual amount of candidates, well above those held in August and November.

Distributed by country, the largest number of candidates -37% - was registered in Italy, it has increases by two points compared with last year's figures. Italy is followed by Spain (7.8% of all applicants), Greece (6.5%), France (5%), China (4%), Brazil (3.7%), South Korea (3.2%), Germany (2.7%) and Japan (2.2%).

The countries that have most increased the number of candidates are China (almost 50% more), Brazil and South Korea (more than 20% each), reports the Cervantes Institute.

SIX LEVELS

There are six levels adapted to the Common European Framework of Reference and seven Diplomas of DELE: DELE A1, A2, B1 (formerly Initial), academic B1, B2 (formerly Intermediate), C1 and C2.

The most requested levels are intermediate: almost two thirds of the candidates (64%) aspire to obtain a diploma B, compared to diplomas A (24%) and C (11%).

This month of May marks the end of the life cycle of the DELE beginner and intermediate exams, whose format and features have been in place since almost 20 years. From the sessions of next August, examinations for diplomas B1 and B2 will have new formats of tests and tasks.  The rating systems will also be modified.

The tests will be held on 24 and 25 May in nearly 800 test centres spread across a hundred countries around the world, of which almost 100 are in Spain. See DELE examination centres.

The registration period began on February 25th and ends on April 19th, inclusive, so there is still time to sign up!

What are these diplomas? Very simple, the DELE are official qualifications accrediting Spanish language skills:

        A1, A2, B1 (formerly initial level),

        B1, B2 (formerly Intermediate)

        C1 and C2

They are valid qualifications and are internationally recognised.

Since 2003, the Instituto Cervantes grants these diplomas on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain and is responsible for academic, administrative, economic and business purposes worldwide.

DELE exams

DELE is the abbreviation of Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (Certificate of Spanish as a foreign language). It’s the best official accreditation for the use and the knowledge of Spanish by someone who doesn’t have it as its mother tongue. This certificate is awarded by the Instituto Cervantes after having accomplished  the official exam. If people talk about DELE, they refer more often to the exam than to the certificate.

In this blog post I’ll give you a summary of the different levels for which an exam can be made. The exam you take depends on the level you have, which is acknowledged by the Cervantes Institute.

- Level A1: the language skills are considered to be satisfactory enough to understand the language and to be able to use common expressions in Hispanic countries. This level can help you to satisfy your instantaneous needs.

- Level A2: the person is able to understand common used sentences and expressions that are connected to relevant themes (information about himself/herself, family, purchases, interests…).

- Level B1: the language skills are considered to be good enough to understand and react adequately to common circumstances. Having this level means it mustn’t be a problem to express your wishes and your needs through simple sentences.

- Level B2: a person with this knowledge level of Spanish can easily communicate in common situations in his/her daily life. This means that he/she can say what he/she has in mind in circumstances where specialised vocabulary is not required.

- Level C1: someone with a C1-level is capable of understanding a large variation of texts of a higher level. He/she also understands ambiguities. This person will use the language in a flexible and effective way for social, academic and professional purposes. He/she can also compose clear and well-structured texts about complex subjects.

- Level C2: the language skills of someone with this level are excellent. He/she can perfectly communicate in situations that require the use of a more complex vocabulary.

Before it was only possible to do an exam for the B1-, B2- and the C2-level. In 2009, an A1-exam was added. In May of 2010, an A2-exam was included to this list and in the end they also added an exam for the C1-level in November 2010.
